In solving this problem, I learned that accurate measurements combined with careful consideration of the kerf of the laser will produce an tight friction fit.  Forgetting to account for the rust on the nuts and bolts created problems with the friction fit, teaching me that even a thousandth of an inch can make a huge difference.
