Assignment 6 | CNC Mental Armour | "Stain Glass" Window Enhancer

I took this project as an opportunity to make something that would transform my own living space in a visual way. By taking the underlying geometry of the piece of wood I was allotted (a 2' x 4' sheet of .25" plywood), I designed a window accessory to alter the light, color, and aesthetics of whatever space it is in. I split the wood it in such a way that, when simply analyzing the CNC cut sheet file (mine is the bottom fourth in the picture below), it does not seem extraordinary; however, once assembled, the pieces I cut out would then transform each other with more depth and variety.

The different colored pieces of cellophane help to add visual depth once light pierces the project. By using the shapes cut out in the "voids" and shifting them to become "solids" in front/behind the key panels, I was able to create a Mondrian-esque composition on my project, and practically got rid of all muda! Finally, extending some of these solids past the boundaries of the original panels (2' x 2' and 1' x 2') I was able to break the rigidity of those rectangular shapes to add direction and system to the design of the project. Even though it was designed for the width of my apartment window, I discovered that my "stain glass" window accessory/enhancer fits quite nicely in a studio window, giving my project multiple locations of function.
