My initial reaction to this assignment was to design something innovative that would still be useful in my everyday life. One of the first ideas I came up with was a fixture that would attach to the back of my studio desk and hold a roll of plotter paper under my desk. Although this design would have been really nice to have-we all know how quickly plotter paper disappears if it is left out in studio-I wanted something more functional. I used the same notching/friction fit ideas to develop a design for the back to a meeting bench. I typically have to sit on these meeting benches for a few hours every week, and the fact that they have no back to rest against can be really painful-not to mention bad for my posture-after that long. The design is basically two vertical, notched beams into which three horizontal slats are friction fit. At the ends of the two beams are two small pieces with two notches: one for the beams to fit into and another to fit around a bar that runs underneath the bench. All of the joints are friction fit, and I painted the whole thing to match a wall color in the meeting room. I also tested out sitting against my design, and was pleasantly surprised to find that it fully supported me as I leaned against it. The use of 1/2" plywood allowed enough flexibility so that the horizontal bars which your back rests against are not uncomfortably stiff. So, in conclusion, for my first CNC-ing experience, it was definitely a trying process but ultimately very educational and rewarding!

Awesome.
