The things technology can do is remarkable and can be very efficient. Being architecture students, we wonder when we will get the chance to sleep, and walking all the way back to our dorm/apartment can be a hassle and a waste of time. Since we really don't have any sleeping areas in studio, I decided to create a PILLOW HOLDER as an accessory to my desk.
I figured out dimensions of a
standard pillow size as well as the desk thickness. Secondly I determined the increasing height at which I (and the general body size) would be able to comfortably sleep on the ribs. The grooves at the top are for pillow stability; due to the pillows flexibility the pillow can lock into position so it does not slide while you sleep. Lastly, I added hook-like features for various uses such as a blanket holder or arm rest.
This is the cut sheet for the cnc router.
Below I added velcro strips to both sides for increased sturdiness; also the friction from the wood on the ribs sliding on wouldn't damage the desk. This also allows the ribs to be easily rearranged horizontally or by height for different users.

The way the pillow grips the rib is shown above; also my sweatshirt is hooked on in this case.
After sanding and finishing, the ribs act as an extension to the desk because of the same type of material (wood). Also the scale of the system is not too large that it disrupts neighbors.
Not only has this simple and effective addition added possible economic value, but a good rest definitely adds value to ones work.
